¿Cómo de necesaria es la explicación del arte abstracto? / How necessary is the explanation of abstract art?

Desde la Galería Ana Serratosa somos conscientes de que en torno al arte contemporáneo existen una serie de prejuicios y creencias sociales que en muchas ocasiones son difíciles de traspasar. Además si nos centramos en el arte abstracto, los comentarios en torno a la falta de entendimiento de la obra se disparan.

Nuestra última exposición se centra en la obra del recientemente fallecido pintor abstracto Xavier Grau, cuyo trabajo, aunque cuenta con gran acogida de la crítica, precisa de cierto contexto histórico para poder ser entendido en su totalidad.

Como galería de arte contemporáneo entendemos que obras de arte contemporáneo como las de Xavier Grau están cargadas de un innegable impacto visual, pero es necesario señalar que detrás de esta estética se esconde un profundo discurso teórico.

Es por ello, que con cada visitantes nos tomamos el tiempo de explicar no solo las características visuales de la obra, sino el contexto histórico político que vivía el artista durante el tiempo en el que las llevó a cabo.

En el caso de la exposición “En memoria de Xavier Grau” quisimos llevarlo un paso más allá, y nos atrevimos con el diseño de una línea temporal que ubicara al artista en tiempo y espacio. De este modo, al mismo tiempo que explicábamos su recorrido, nos permite hacer distinción de  las diferentes etapas que componen su carrera profesional.

En primer lugar cabe señalar que Xavier Grau nació en 1951 en una Barcelona sumergida en plena dictadura, donde sus años de juventud se verían marcados por unos fuertes cambios sociales, a la vez que políticos y económicos. Tanta efervescencia social supone el caldo de cultivo perfecto para que una serie de jóvenes artistas se reúnan y se posicionen respecto a la corriente pictórica dominante de la época.

De esta manera surge TRAMA en 1973, un grupo artístico, que terminaría derivando en revista, y entre cuyos integrantes destacan nombres como Jose Manuel Broto, Gonzalo Tena y Carlos Tena, además de Xavier Grau.

Este grupo de cuatro jóvenes pretendía importar el movimiento pictórico francés conocido como Support Surface, y reivindicar de este modo la pintura por la pintura. Es por ello que a este autor se le considera una de las piezas clave dentro del arte abstracto español.

Para entender la obra de Xavier Grau no podemos dejar de lado sus influencias artísticas, donde predominan las referencias de la escuela americana. Es imposible no recordar a las mujeres de Wilhelm De Kooning, las siluetas de Arshile Gorky, o el expresionismos abstracto de  Philip Guston cuando contemplados algunos de los cuadros de Grau.

Si continuamos con el estudio de su carrera profesional vemos como desde bien joven Xavier Grau empezó a contar con el reconocimiento de la crítica, pues fue en 1979, con tan solo 28 años de edad, cuando su primera exposición pictórica tuvo lugar. Esta se presentó en la Galería Buades de Madrid, y a ella le siguieron otras como la de 1997 en el Centre d’Art Sant Mónica de Barcelona, o la de 2008 en Zaragoza.

Total ellas recogen obras de diferentes etapas creativas del artista, en la que se aprecian figuras geométricas a todo color que se entremezclan con otros elementos en el lienzo de manera caótica y poco precisa, pero que terminan creando armonía visual a los ojos del espectador.

Por último hemos querido señalar la exposición "Las puertas" que tuvo lugar en nuestra galería de arte contemporáneo en el año 2011, comisariada por el reconocido curador Francisco Carpio, y que recoge obras del artista desde 1992, hasta la fecha de inauguración. En ella se aprecia la obra de un pintor ya consagrado, con un claro estilo pictórico y que se reafirma en su posición de artista abstracto, haciendo referencia a su juventud y a la corriente pictórica que personalmente se encargó de importar desde Francia. Es por ello que nos encontramos ante un pintor con la firme convicción de la que pintura ha sido siempre el inicio y el fin de todo.

From the Ana Serratosa Gallery we are aware that around contemporary art there are a number of prejudices and social beliefs that are often difficult to overcome. In addition, if we focus on abstract art, comments about the lack of understanding of the work are triggered.

Our last exhibition focuses on the work of the recently deceased abstract painter Xavier Grau, whose work, although well received by critics, requires a certain historical context to be understood in its entirety.

As a contemporary art gallery we understand that works of contemporary art such as those of Xavier Grau are charged with an undeniable visual impact, but it is necessary to point out that behind this aesthetic hides a deep theoretical discourse.

That is why, with each visitor we take the time to explain not only the visual characteristics of the work, but the political historical context that the artist lived during the time in which he carried them out.

In the case of the exhibition "In memory of Xavier Grau" we wanted to take it a step further, and we dared with the design of a timeline that would place the artist in time and space. In this way, at the same time that we explained his journey, allows us to make a distinction of the different stages that make up his professional career.

First of all it should be noted that Xavier Grau was born in 1951 in a Barcelona submerged in full dictatorship, where his youth years would be marked by strong social changes, as well as political and economic. Such social effervescence is the perfect breeding ground for a series of young artists to meet and position themselves in relation to the dominant pictorial current of the time.

In this way TRAMA emerged in 1973, an artistic group, which would end up deriving in magazine, and among whose members stand out names such as Jose Manuel Broto, Gonzalo Tena and Carlos Tena, as well as Xavier Grau.

This group of four young people wanted to import the French pictorial movement known as Support Surface, and thus claim painting for painting. That is why this author is considered one of the key pieces within Spanish abstract art.

To understand the work of Xavier Grau we cannot ignore his artistic influences, where the references of the American school predominate. It is impossible not to remember the women of Wilhelm De Kooning, the silhouettes of Arshile Gorky, or the abstract expressionisms of Philip Guston when contemplating some of Grau’s paintings.

If we continue with the study of his professional career we see how from a young age Xavier Grau began to have the recognition of the critic, because it was in 1979, at only 28 years of age, when his first pictorial exhibition took place. This was presented at the Buades Gallery in Madrid, followed by others such as that of 1997 at the Centre d'Art Sant Mónica in Barcelona, or that of 2008 in Zaragoza.

In total they collect works from different creative stages of the artist, in which geometric figures are appreciated in full color that intermingle with other elements in the canvas in a chaotic and inaccurate way, but that end up creating visual harmony in the eyes of the viewer.

Finally, we wanted to mention the exhibition "The doors" that took place in our contemporary art gallery in 2011, curated by the renowned curator Francisco Carpio, and which includes works by the artist from 1992 until the date of inauguration. It shows the work of an already consecrated painter, with a clear pictorial style and reaffirms his position as an abstract artist, referring to his youth and the pictorial current that he personally imported from France. That is why we are before a painter with the firm conviction of which painting has always been the beginning and the end of everything.
