ESTO NOS SALVARÁ Bilbao 2026 is a project born out of the conviction that contemporary art can be an active tool for reflection and social transformation. More than just an exhibition, it is an initiative that unfolds in public spaces and invites the public to participate, question and engage in dialogue on pressing issues such as sustainability, care and community.

In line with the gallery’s ethos, the project fits very naturally with our interest in promoting artistic practices that go beyond the traditional exhibition space. We have long been working on projects that connect art, place and community, and THIS WILL SAVE US Bilbao 2026 represents a further step in that direction: opening up art to new audiences and contexts, creating shared experiences.

We have also seen the value of working within the local context: involving local producers, teams and collaborators not only facilitates the project’s implementation but also enriches it and makes it more meaningful for the public.

The Artist

Ghada Amer (born 1963 in Cairo, Egypt; lives and works in New York) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work primarily explores the ambiguous and transient nature of the paradox that arises when seeking concrete definitions of East and West, feminine and masculine, art and craft. Through her paintings, sculptures and public garden projects, Amer takes traditional notions of cultural identity, abstraction and religious fundamentalism and subverts them to advocate for an ethical stance that is in keeping with our times.

Amer’s work is held in public collections around the world, including the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha; the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; the Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA; the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR; the Guggenheim Museum, Abu Dhabi; and the Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, amongst others.

Alongside invitations to prestigious group exhibitions and biennials, such as the Whitney Biennial in 2000 and the Venice Biennales in 1999 (where he won the UNESCO prize), 2005 and 2007, he was offered a mid-career retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York in 2008. And a further, more comprehensive and extensive retrospective at three major museums in Marseille (France) in December 2022.
